5 Helpful Habits to Stay Consistent with your Workout Routine

@ericaallor // instagram

Consistency is key. Everything you do, you want to be consistent. This will establish and reaffirm your commitment to yourself. Ways that have helped me stay consistent are writing down my goals. Whether it’s for the day, week, month or year. I write them down.

Specifically, let’s help you with small habits that will assist you to stay on track with your goals. Here are a few tips that can help support those goals.

  1. SET REALISTIC GOALS

This is one of the most important tips to keep in mind. By setting realistic goals you are more likely to achieve them. Setting high standards that are not achievable in your current lifestyle sets you up for failure. It’s the sad truth. Let’s look at New Year’s goals. Of people who set NYE goals, only 9% of those keep their goal until the end of January.

To help make these realistic, ask yourself questions for the general goal outline. How often will you be able to work out during the week? 2-5x? Will you workout in the morning or after work? Pick a time and stick to it. Are you going to follow a program to stay motivated? Do you have a gym membership or an at-home account ready to go? JAsking yourself the hard questions will help you achieve the hard goals. Set clear, realistic expectations. A couple of programs that might be worth your time:

2. BABY STEPS FOR SUCCESS

I live by the phrase “baby steps” for every goal I’m going after. We can burnout too fast if we jump into a new challenge more aggressively than our bodies can handle. You can go to the gym workout for three days in a row for two hours going as hard as you possibly can but that won’t last you for a month. Trust me, I’ve done it. Cliche but it’s not a sprint it’s a marathon. Fitness is forever; start small. Doing this will help with consistency, progress, and long-term healthy habits.

Rather than spending 3 hours at the gym for the first two days, test yourself. Wake up at a realistic time to get 20-40 minutes of movement going. Do this for 3 days in a row without burning yourself and you’ll be able to increase this over the next 3 months.

3. SET YOUR CLOTHES OUT THE NIGHT BEFORE

My biggest tip for making this an everyday ritual is to set your gym outfit out the night before. This will be the first thing you see in the morning and the first task you accomplish. It’ll get you in the gym mindset rather than putting on your sweats or staying in your PJs. The saying “look good, feel good” is real when it comes to gym swag, buy that cute outfit and rock it because it really does help. Even if it’s winter set out a sweatshirt so you don't make it an excuse to keep your sweats on.

4. FIND AN ACCOUNTABILITY PARTNER

Let all your fans on Instagram know. I promise they either care or don't care but you’ve put it out there that you’re starting a commitment (and they won’t find it as annoying until you start doing better than them, I promise). Social media can be one of your accountability partners.

Find a friend you can send a Snapchat to every morning before your workout that you’re at the gym and after completing your workout. It holds you accountable while also motivating your friends to be better. A win-win in a badass friendship if you ask me.

5. SCHEDULE IT

It’s never too late to start. Treat yourself and book a couple of classes 1-2x a week. If you skipped your morning workout, book a class for after work so you’re locked and committed without making an excuse. This will be the highest form of accountability. You’re not going to miss those paid classes. I even recommend spending the money on a monthly membership to a pilates studio, OTH, or an F45 class, whatever you have around you. The price is worth it for accountability. You're investing in your health, it’s hard to put a price tag on that.

So, get them booked and on your calendar.

6. REWARD YOURSELF (surprise!)

Risk and reward baby. Treat yourself. Crushed that first week? Order that workout set you’ve been eyeing! Reward yourself each week or monthly. But reward yourself when you tackle your goals.
